Roblox could avoid so much shit if they just REMOVED THE DAMN CHAT FUNCTION!!!

Never in my childhood did I need to chat with strangers in a game. Sure, you could chat on runescape, or any decent mmorpg at the time, but the chat was moderated, and key point, they weren’t hotbeds for child predators

I was scared off a couple years ago when I attempted to host it myself. I took a break from selfhosting, but now I’m back, and from what I learned in the past, I know now not to torture myself swimming upstream when there are far easier downstream currents to follow.

I’m looking at conduit but I’m currently writing up a doc to plan out the process, and understand it before I actually deploy anything. I don’t want to open ports, don’t need federation and don’t need encryption, since I’ll be using tailscale to host a private server to only members of my tailnet.

I’ll report back, either here or in the main community, because I don’t want to expose ports, rent a VPS or use ansible for a simple private server for less than 10 people.

I lack formal education in the tech field, but I honestly wish I didn’t waste my 20’s on drugs (it was fun though, honestly) and an attempt at a rap career, instead of getting my hands dirty in the field, so to speak. I got into computers in the early 2000’s, discovered linux in 2006, and since then I’ve been that friend who’s into computers and stuff.

I kind of forget what exactly got me into self-hosting . . . but youtube probably had something to do with it, with many youtubers like Raid Owl, Level1Techs, and even LTT talking about things like Jellyfin and TrueNAS, it got me curious as to why I never got into it sooner.

I honestly only use debian headless, and manage the server via ssh and manage docker containers via portainer’s web ui.

I’m not new to linux though, so 100% stay with a desktop environment like the one that comes with Mint, because that makes things much much simpler. It’s all debian under the hood at the end of the day, and 95% of services provide install guides for debian-based systems anyways. Is this optiplex 3050 your first homelabbing system?

I’ve mentally just settled with the fact this is completely out of the average pc enthusiast’s hands.

I just remember when I built my first pc back in 2012, how a pair of 8GB DDR3 sticks of kingston fury RAM costed almost $500 dollars at the time (after tax, Canada), and that’s 5 years after DDR3 was released. Feels odd to be back there price wise, but it’s not the first time prices will soar, and it certainly won’t be the last.

My plan is just to save up for anything like I did back then.

I’m illogically fearful to try using the nouveau driver. I don’t have a 50 series nvidia gpu, but if I did things like this make me afraid to stick with nvidia for the future, even if progress is being made.

I downvoted because not understanding the hate for windows 11 is really just due to ignorance at this point. I mean, not everyone is a power user, but windows has been on the steady decline for at least 10 years now. Enshittification isn’t some new concept.

hmm, I started playing it a few months back, firs time playing bloodborne, and the experience was ruined as soon as I got to the unseen village, with those huge “things” everywhere, my FPS went from a cool 50 -75 to barely scraping 20. Sucks, had to stop playing, I will test this later and report!

I think Rockstar is just too big to fail, at this point. Not saying they aren’t capable of anything shady or unjust, but where’s the proof of anything, and how many people are really going to boycott a game that will likely break records in the gaming industry save for some catastrophic world event, like another pandemic or world war?

just like music bands, if the group doesn’t have the passion and grit to live poorly while grinding at work, the edgy, experimental stuff gets pushed aside because the market for it is just inherently smaller than say, the next Final Fantasy remake or Persona.

But with the internet and social media, the indie scene is the place to be for edgy, artistic, unique games right now as well, so in a way, the scene is migrating “underground”.

not to mention the joy of emulation, which older hardware does very well these days

I guess it would take maybe a million lost customers, but I doubt that will ever happen because the bulk of Nintendo sales go to people who only care about the games, not the company.

But even if a million of their customers fell off the face of the earth tomorrow, nothing would change. Nintendo is too successful for their own good. I’ll never buy a Nintendo product, but let’s not fool ourselves thinking a small group of people on the internet has anything on the largest video game company in Japan.
