Is renaming the instance domain without reinstalling Lemmy related to changing the WebFinger query? It’s the trick some instances use to have a different instance domain from their username domain, like @user@domain.com while the instance is mastodon.domain.com.

https://leddit.danmark.party, because it’s running a bot named Leddit that pulls content from Reddit. And, uh, Denmark Party, because I love Denmark and I thought it would be really funny to own a domain named this. I also wanted to split my serious and silly projects into different domains, so I bought this extra domain and use it for all of my silly projects now.

(Not posting directly from that instance so I can leave the bot in peace, but federation definitely works because posts from it are getting through to other instances)

I played it in 2020 and it’s the same. The devs probably didn’t want to make them too smart so it could be played as an idle game.

It will continue to work if you’re the only user on your Teddit instance. Teddit (and Libreddit, and any of the Reddit alternative frontends) use the Reddit API un-authenticated and after July 1st, they will be rate-limited to 10 requests per minute. The limit is enough for the activity of one logged-out user but it will break the proxy instances that allow many users to combine their traffic under one IP.

It’s great that they’re going back to traditional, self-hosted forums instead of corporate social media for support and discussions, but damn, I don’t miss having to manage hundreds of accounts with unique logins for each forum. I understand that they want more control over forum moderation and the Fediverse’s “anyone can post there” system makes it troublesome. It would be great if there was more widespread adoption of decentralized, “one login to access everything” systems.

The article or the thread? The article is just a list of who’s demanding payment from Twitter and how much Twitter owes each company. The thread explains why Twitter has a confusing system of multiple offices and a brand new expensive building (that they are not paying rent on).

USB-A is one-sided, unlike USB-C, so you can’t do direct data transfers between two devices with USB-A ports. It’s much slower too. Electronic waste is not ideal but it has to happen for a large-scale hardware upgrade. I try to reduce it by recycling my USB-A bricks and cables.

I also cannot understand why, unless you use Apple devices exclusively, you would be happy that one company’s series of devices has to use a completely unique charging system from every other device in the world. I don’t care if Lightning is better when it’s proprietary. If Apple “sticks two fingers up” and doesn’t integrate USB-C charging into the iPhone 15, I won’t be buying another device from them, because I’m tired of having to carry two different cables around - one USB-C for my laptop, Android phone, power bank, speaker and other devices, and one Lightning charger for nothing else but the damn iPhone.

Seeing the community get destroyed is hard, but seeing the whole company the community relies on being taken over by someone who doesn’t care about is okay?! These unpaid janitors seriously need to re-evaluate their priorities.

First time I heard of migrating from Caddy to Traefik and not the other way around. The usual complaint about Traefik is that it’s too complicated to manage all of the moving parts. I have only used Caddy with Dockerized setups though so I don’t know what the others are like.

Saved this comment. It claims that the Lemmy frontend and backend are stateless and can be scaled arbitrarily, as can the web server. The media server (pict-rs) and Postgres database are the limitations to scaling. I’m working to deploy Lemmy with external object storage to solve media storage scaling and there’s probably some database experts figuring out Postgres optimization and scaling as well. None of the instances are big enough to run into serious issues with vertical scaling yet, so this won’t be a problem for a while.

PiHole, Adguard Home and the like can’t block ads on smart TVs? Or is it something like the TV refusing to start if it contacts the ad server and doesn’t get a response?

Meta’s main income stream is data mining and they will take advantage of federation to collect data (not metadata, but human-generated content is still very valuable for AI model training) of users on federated instances. Any content that federates over to this instance will be cached on Meta servers where they can do whatever they like with it. There is no legal data protection framework for content retrieved from federated networks and Meta’s lawyers will try to argue that federating with this platform counts as giving consent to the platform’s TOS. Meta platforms introduce lots of advertising and bots to the network. Don’t just ignore this platform, give them the Gab treatment.

That, and for Lemmy specifically, its history of being a tankie forum. Without the Reddit refugee migration, if you joined Lemmy as a single user, you would be alone among communists and eventually get bullied into leaving. Already in 2020-2021, Fediverse users knew about Lemmy, but they avoided promoting it because of its userbase. This Reddit situation provided the push to get many normal users over to Lemmy at once to drown out the communist users.

A lot of VPS providers block port 25 (and other email ports) because they don’t want people to set up bot spam mail servers on their services. Could that be the issue?

User flairs are going to be implemented on Lemmy soon, so people with verifiable credentials could come forward to the mods with proof and receive a special flair. Doesn’t entirely solve the problem of groups of users brigading and spreading misinformation, but showing discretion towards things one reads on the internet should be the standard practice, especially in tech communities.

I don’t think Mullvad’s port forwarding decision can be compared to Reddit’s greed. They were getting in trouble with law enforcement for providing tunnels to illegal websites, so they had to either identify those customers or stop port forwarding if they didn’t want to get the entire company shut down.
