13·6 months agoThis thing Anubis always flags me for some reason. I use mullvad and safari (ios) with some add and tracker blocking extensions.

2·6 months agoI’ve had trouble with it using a vpn and privacy browsers. It often blocks me until I use a default browser.

Technology@beehaw.org•Anthropic destroyed millions of print books to build its AI models
11·6 months agoCopyright law also doesn’t allow them to download the entirety of a piracy database of books. But here we are, they clearly don’t care about copyright law.

Technology@beehaw.org•Anthropic destroyed millions of print books to build its AI models
83·6 months agoI think it’s a waste tbh. Like it’s one of those capitalist things of “well its not profitable to sell so lets destroy them”, when anything made for the good of the people would’ve seen a massive opportunity to distribute books to people for free!

3·6 months agoMe trying to hold both truths at once that Street view is an absolutely fantastic tool and that I hate google so damn much.

Technology@beehaw.org•Google settles shareholder lawsuit, will spend $500M on being less evil
26·7 months agoThe company will have to form a board-level committee devoted to overseeing the company’s regulatory compliance and antitrust risk, a rarity for US firms. This group will report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai. There will also be reforms at other levels of the company that allow employees to identify potential legal pitfalls before they affect the company. Google has also agreed to preserve communications. Google’s propensity to use auto-deleting chats drew condemnation from several judges overseeing its antitrust cases.
I guess that’s good. But it feels like slapping a bandaid on an amputated leg. Like in the grand scheme of things it won’t change anything to do with the most evil stuff google does (surveillance capitalism).

2·7 months agoJellyfin is basically as easy to use as plex within the same network. I’ve set up both dueing the past 6 months. The only big difference is that Jellyfin is much more of a pain to work through port forwarding.

Technology@beehaw.org•ChatGPT is shifting rightwards politically
11·9 months agoI wonder if this is just because as the world has shifted rightward the training data has too.
Or if it is a genuine OpenAI policy, in this political climate it would not suprise me if they were shifting it rightwards on purpose.

Technology@beehaw.org•The man with a mind-reading chip in his brain, thanks to Elon Musk
1·9 months agoMaybe people can be corrupted. But I think it’s selection biases. If you’re the type of person to fuck people over to earn money (big buisness) or to seek power above others (politics), maybe you were corrupted in the first place? I mean it’s hard to make it in either of those without doing a lot of morally questionable stuff.
It does not make me feel good that legit half of tech outlets are owned by one company.

Technology@beehaw.org•Bumble heightens safety measures with new ID verification feature
6·9 months agoNope Nope Nope. I do not want the government having that data. Knowing our governments, they will contract this to third parties who will almost certainly sell that data.
I also do not want elected politicians having the power to shape relationships and sexuality of the population to that degree. Too much centralised power.

Technology@beehaw.org•Google Gemini collects far more personal data than its rivals, surprising nobody
23·10 months ago
Suprised to see Anthropic collecting more data than OpenAI. Their whole “ethical AI” schtick seems pretty hypocritical now.

3·10 months agoI know we do. I’ve got thousands of wikipedia edits.
And it often isn’t as easy as just editing unfortunately. A lot of pages have overprotective people watching the changelog trying to shelter their pet theories/biases.

9·10 months agoThis.
The smartest person earth (if there is such a thing) will do dumb stuff, because they cannot know everything.

I expect better from a popular FOSS tool being used by privacy aware people though.
