I’m about to get rid of my ageing “dumb” TV and not replace it. Everything comes in to my laptop now, so any monitor and set of speakers to plug it in to will do.
My prediction is that this is going to be the end of the line for TVs as stand-alone hardware - just like most people don’t really have stand-alone Hi-Fi systems any more.
Yes, I was kind of being rhetorical there, I thought that would be enough to draw attention to what’s going on. Also a new Lemmy account that exclusively links to one unknown website is a big red flag.

Why would we attack the author? That seems like an oddly specific request that makes me oddly suspicious of the author, if anything.
Not for me it isn’t, smartphones and tablets have always been a horrible user experience (and I’m always bewildered by stories about them replacing desktop/laptops for people), I only have a smartphone out of social pressure, making them even worse is going to drive me away further.
I don’t necessarily agree it would be all that difficult, but either way I can’t think of a more essential skill to be teaching with those chromebooks.
Teach the kids to do it themselves - this allergy towards teaching any kind of computer skills these days is ridiculous.
My presumption is the kind of people who would notice that kind of thing are either OK with it or are already off of Reddit.
Why is that? Covering up the protests would be the opposite of drawing attention to it surely?
Wouldn’t be surprised at all at this point if Reddit manipulates this version of r/Place to make it look like the protests are smaller than they are.
All of these things can be done in Firefox and you can do it without hammering another nail in to open web standards - don’t use chrome.
If “currently” means before the debacle (because I don’t use Reddit currently): no, I’m primarily a desktop user, I used old Reddit and RES and I don’t really have much personal attachment to 3rd party apps (that doesn’t mean I won’t stand with those who do).
I think that the API issue is more of a symptom of something much more deeply wrong with Reddit, if it wasn’t the API it would have been some other breaking point.
In the era of “smart” phones and saved phone numbers (not to mention contactless payments) I use calculators much more than I dial telephone numbers. I think the calculator layout is very much the standard.
Isn’t this the company accused of violating GPL and not releasing their Linux source code?
My biggest regret was getting rid of a perfectly good portable CRT TV that would have been ideal for pre-7th generation gaming, just as they stopped making good quality CRTs.
