It’s fun. Has its clear limitations, so it’s not as broad as many rpgs, but what it does do, it pulls off well. The “gamers” being mad about the pronoun picker is the source of a lot of the derision as far as I can tell.

Following the release of Shadow of War, Monolith wasn’t interested in developing another Middle-Earth game and went on to develop a new IP codenamed Legacy. However, WB Games wasn’t and still isn’t interested in developing new IP and wants its studios to concentrate on making games around already established IP

I have nothing to corroborate this other than my intuition, but I’d bet the outcry against Microsoft in the wake of them shuttering Tango will make them far more hesitant to do something similar in the future. They have done a lot of work to move away from the GFWL era and have clawed just a little bit of goodwill back which does a lot to sell games, and the Tango closure was clearly an own goal that really hurt their image.

Psychonauts 2, Forza Horizon 5, Pentiment, Grounded, and AOE 4 all reviewed well. Barring AOE 4 I played all of them and enjoyed them. None of them would qualify as blockbusters though, maybe Forza.

edit: if Bethsoft games count, then I loved Indiana Jones. First game I got every achievement for in a long time.

This article articulates what I’ve been feeling as a gamepass subscriber. I was able to get through the rough years without feeling cheated thanks to the three year conversion trick making Gamepass cheap as hell for that period. Nowadays I just look out for good deals for codes online to keep it under the retail subscription cost. If I play enough of these games in a timeframe my subscription feels like a good value. Thankfully there’s an abundance of games now. Really looking forward to Avowed
