Thanks for your edit. I did run into that problem, but you gave me a better starting point! probably saved me hours of frustrated searching.

My solution, if anyone else needs this, was to install winetricks (through the discovery store) > and install xact_64 for the game (Install a Windows DLL or component). I mostly followed this tutorial and used xact_64 instead of whatever they said. And I did install FO4 through heroic the first time.

Yeah, fallout isn’t that complicated. I’ve configured a number of keyboard strategy games, so this should be easy compared to those if I go that route. Thanks.

No, the implication is that when a major website reviews a game “best of the year” often means that it has had a huge effect on the gaming society. Instead it reads like a like a single person’s opinion piece, which makes me feel like I am being tricked into believing this is already a an established amazing game that I should already have known about. I personally am a little more skeptical about a single opinion that I can’t verify than something that a lot more people have played. That is my point. I have no problem believing that they believe this is a great game.

Bold to call something that came out a month ago and I doubt many people have heard of “one of the best games of the year”.

I got a ps4 because I could use remote play and not take up the tv so that I could play next to my wife. It was ok, but I had to setup my computer on the couch with charger, kind of a hassle. When I got a switch it was a game changer because I could just grab it and flop down on the couch next to my wife. I imagine (I don’t have one) the steam deck is basically the same.

If that is what you guys do also then it will probably be great for you.

It’s becoming more accepted. I have a few friends in their 40s who are the biggest gamers I know. You may be on the edge of what might be seen as an "acceptable " age, but it is very common for adults. I can see how dating might bring out the judgement in some people, but you shouldn’t have to repress that part of yourself, especially since you do it with your kids. As it becomes more and more common many people won’t stop doing something they loved doing their whole lives.
