  • It seems like every time the alt-right and neo-Nazis make something a new dog whistle (remember the “ok” sign thing that started on 4chan?) the left is just like “oh fuck, I guess we better stop using that now.”

I’m not sure there’s a better option. It’s not like it’s a good idea to just go on flashing “ok” signs and pretending it hasn’t been coopted by fascists, but it seems shitty and frustrating to just cede ground like that every time the alt right is just like “this is ours now.”

Come to think of it, I named a project at my workplace “IG-88” a while back and didn’t think about the Nazi connection until the name was already in common use. (With that name, the project in question even had a badass theme song.)

  • Thanks for the answers!

Too bad it was never open sourced. Seems like someone could have stripped out the assets, made a tool to extract assets from the ROM, and the result wouldn’t infringe.

Maybe the author would be willing to open source the engine with no assets now. We can hope, I guess.

Just seems like it wouldn’t have taken that much more work to make it less likely to be taken down by threats from Nintendo.

Edit: I wrote this response before I saw @nanoUFO’s response about it having been open source.

Edit2: I just realized the GitHub repo doesn’t indicate what license that code is under. So, not FOSS and it’s unclear what’s legal to do with that code.

  • SEO’s a dark art.

In general, the more other pages (and the more highly-ranked pages) link to a page, the higher that page will show up in Google. But that’s also quite an oversimplification. (I don’t know that the rules Google uses for deciding how to rank pages in search results are even public info.

I don’t think there’s much any one person (even the owner) of a site can do to make a site show up higher in Google. The owner of a site can make smart decisions about how to ensure the site gets users coming back and posting links on social media and such, but ultimately the way a page/site gets to show up in more Google searches is by being popular.

My advice: don’t focus on Google or SEO or anything. Focus on fostering a community that’s worth coming back to and worth linking to.

  • Shite. That sucks.

Can you share more about the symptoms? You say “it does not get past the Nintendo logo.” Do you mean the “Switch” logo? What’s it do when it gets to the Nintendo logo? Hang on the logo forever? Does the screen go black after a second or three? If the latter, after the screen goes off, does the power button repeat the performance, or do you have to hold it down for a while (to shut it down), let go for a sec, and hold it down again to make it boot up again before it responds?

You can of course send it to Nintendo to get it fixed. That’s probably your best bet.

But if you can’t or don’t want to go that direction, you might be able to resurrect your system with homebrew/hacking. That’d require getting set up to hack your Switch, though. And might void your warranty.

First thing I’d try if you want to go that direction is to just run Hekate (a fancy homebrew bootloader for the Switch) and boot into Atmosphere via that. No need to set up EmuMMC just for that test, but there is some risk of getting banned from the eshop and online play if you make any changes to your Switch (like installing pirated games, for instance) and then connect to the internet.

It’s possible something went wrong with the efuses on your system and your Switch isn’t starting because it thinks you’ve hacked it and manually downgraded the OS even though you didn’t. I believe Hekate and Atmosphere would let you boot into your Switch’s OS in a way that would make your Switch ignore any efuse discrepancies. Might get you past the issue you’re having.

But again, there are some risks with this approach and if you’re wanting to get it fixed by Nintendo, I’d say probably your best bet is just to send it to Nintendo.
