While I’m sure there will be a lot of false starts with this tech and it will take a while to iron out the kinks, I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time. This will probably be similar to the switch from small, limited world maps in games to expansive open-worlds. It’s going to be a massive boost to immersion and will probably lead to some hilarious bugs/unexpected behaviours. Can’t wait!

I was in the same boat as you. I ended up getting the Quest 3, because frankly, it’s one of the best headsets on the market right now. While Meta still tries it’s best to vacuum my data, I’ve disabled as many data sharing options as I can find.
I do most of my VR gaming on PCVR through Steam Link, which is outstanding. If you have a PC and a good WiFi 6 router, you can avoid the Meta marketplace for the most part by buying PCVR games on Steam directly. That way Meta doesn’t get as much data out of you.
Ah, that’s fair. I’m a pretty casual player and didn’t really go deep beyond the medium skill levels, so I didn’t really appreciate the cut-corners beyond that. I hardly even played much multiplayer TBH, I played and loved the single-player campaigns, which is what I tend to do on most games :D
I saw that announcement video when it first came out and was super hyped for The Division. I didn’t end up playing it until around 2019 and I was really impressed with how close to the trailer the actual gameplay was. I know it had some controversy, but I guess I’m easy to impress lol
I was never particularly into the cyberpunk genre, so I was largely immune to the Cyberpunk 2077 hype, and subsequent disappointment and anger. I’d seen tons of videos of trailers and gameplay, and never really expected to play the game myself.
I built a beast of a new PC a few days ago and picked up CP2077 on sale to put it through its paces. I loaded up Cyberpunk and my jaw was on the floor. This is the most beautiful game I’ve ever seen! The gameplay feels smooth and satisfying and I’m really engrossed in the lore and environment. Of course, I’m playing the 2.1 patched version of the game, so I don’t know what the experience at launch would have been like. Regardless, so far it’s felt like an incredible game!
I’m looking to get a 4090 this black Friday, and even with these refreshes, doesn’t seem like my purchasing decision would really be affected, unless they’re also refreshing the 4090.
Yeah, the games have been stale for a while. I really enjoy the gameplay, especially the liberation mechanics so I got elthe new games even though they just seem like copies.
On the other hand, each new game does look gorgeous, so there’s that.

Funnily enough, I block very liberally.
I find that having the option to block by keywords, instances, communities and users let’s me curate my feed exactly as I want. What I wouldn’t want is for the blocks to be too broad of a brush (like in the users of instances example), which would lead to missing out on valuable conversations.
Strongly disagree. I want to block certain instances from my feed to remove posts I’m not interested in (eg NSFW, repost bots), but I have nothing against the users.
If users are blocked too, please add that behind a setting toggle.
I don’t have any particular complaints about the speed of Lemmy development or which features the devs are prioritizing or shutting down. Since there are two primary devs who are working on a pretty complex Rust codebase, it is going to take time for new contributors to understand it inside out as well as they do. The philosophy of a codebase is also very important for maintainers to guard, as just adding code or features without an overarching vision can lead to chaos.
Having said that, I’m strongly in favour of multiple forks of the Lemmy backend bring developed. This allows new features, visions, optimizations, etc to be developed quickly and a lot of diverse opinions and philosophies to be entertained, exactly as we’re seeing with instances. Alternative UIs are another example of the benefits of this approach.
This also allows Lemmy maintainers to see which changes are beneficial, and merge them back into the main codebase much more easily. For example, if a fork has 10x the performance with half the resource usage, it’ll be an easy sell to merge back in.

That’s huge! Makes me realize that there’s not really a way for anybody to know that a particular result is from Lemmy/the fediverse by looking at it, especially with the weird TLDs people use. I wonder if Google will eventually start recognizing ActivityPub clients differently?
Interesting. Seems like it might be worth it for me to look into Ansible and perhaps even Proxmox on the new SFFPC I’m building as a media center for stability/reliability.

So in addition to docker containers, you use separate VMs for isolation? Or are you just referring to the docker containers themselves?
I have separate docker containers for different apps too, but no virtualization beyond that.
That is actually an excellent point! I’m imagining a Lydia from Skyrim who would actually comment on your actual quest progression without just resorting to canned responses.
