It does help set a good precedent. When companies try to do the same thing, further hurting smaller artists, we can point to this case

Some Lemmy compatible platforms do stuff like that

• allow you to see both Lemmy style content and Microblog style content in the same platform
• allow you to follow individual users.
• include hashtags that federate out so the Lemmy posts appear under that hashtag for microblog users

Something like that could work, as long as it’s an additional option and not a change to how communities currently work.

Mixing hashtags with communities sounds like a bad idea because of how much content would come in at once. For example, there are a few RSS feed communities and already those ones are overwhelming to keep up with. Most posts sit with no comments and 1 vote, which doesn’t work for the vote & comment based way we organize content here.

We can improve how we federate these platforms together, but I prefer the tagging method. That way it’s a conscious decision to post a microblog post in a community.

It is a good question, I had the same when I first heard about it.

I think lots of people keep both installed:

• the default one is good for managing server related things
• this one is good for daily use, especially for any other users you might have

What I liked:

• feels much faster and smoother
• UI is nice and clean
• download manager works nicely, as another user mentioned. You don’t need to open a separate app to play the files

That might be my bad, I saw an update notification and it may have been Droid-ify.

Sometimes we also don’t think about how we could be doing something better. Another thing that comes to mind, which I sometimes forget, is upvoting the post that you are commenting on. Usually if I’m commenting, I want more people to see and join the discussion, but I forget to upvote before leaving the tab

That’s a good point, I try to post a few relevant pieces each time and add context in the post body. Still, not all posts are good and so I’m open to people pointing it out when it happens :)

A lot of my RSS feed is for healthcare content or local news, and those communities don’t have much content otherwise. I’ll see about trying to get more of a discussion going for each of the posts I share

I’m fuzzy on the details, but I do get reports from users on another instance as long as it’s “relevant” (ex. in one of our communities, one of our users)

Banning a foreign user on our instance will fix the problem for our instance, but they need to be banned on the home instance too in order to stop the spam from continuing

One thing I noticed the other day, while banning one such bot, is that the same network has been posting on Reddit as well.

Turns out the Reddit ones have been posting the spam for months, while the Lemmy ones get banned within hours.

Part of that is the lower volume of content here, but part of it is also the great people that take the time to report bad content ♥️

For this universe of instances to grow, but also to add a bit of personality to the platform! Do a bit of Reddit and add customization options for each community, like on the Minecraft Subreddit of old Reddit that I’ve always smiled at.

For sure! We don’t talk enough about how much customization there is for Lemmy. There is a wide variety of mobile apps that do things in different ways, and userscripts/userstyles to customize the desktop interface. A lot of instances are also running multiple frontends, each maintained by a different dev or team.

For example, our instance is running:

• Alexandrite interface at alex.lemmy.ca

Many possibilities, and I’m hoping we can see community customization too someday :)
