PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Valve Responds To Steam Machine's HDMI 2.1 Display Support Controversy [HW support is there, but "The HDMI forum" doesn’t allow with OpenSource drivers]English
11·5 days agoI’m not sure where I got this idea, but I thought it was because Display Port doesn’t carry audio, and a single-cable solution was more appealing.
But apparently Display Port also supports audio, just none of my devices seem to recognize it…?
Apparently the only advantage of HDMI is ARC (Audio Return Channel), allowing devices to send audio back to the video source, which might be useful in some home theater setups.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Immich Is Now Stable!English
15·14 days agoThat video was… something…
Anyway I love Immich. It’s definitely been on a stable release for a bit, but I think they’re just trying to get the word out. A lot of people seem to think it’s still in alpha.
Personally, I’ve been running the same Immich server for years now, rolling all the way up to the current release and I’ve never had any data loss. I just had to read the patch notes and adjust my docker compose accordingly a couple times.
It’s well worth paying for that supporter badge, btw. I’ve easily gotten more than $100 value out of it.

You’re, right, I misread the post.
At that point DNS is handled by whatever network you’re on. Since that not always under your control, hosting a private VPN (and setting DNS though that) is the way to go.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Become the Fourth Best-Selling Game Ever - Sold Over 79 Million Units, Surpassing Mario Kart 8English
4·1 month agoI suspect its lead will only widen since Mario Kart World will intercept most new purchases for that franchise, and we certainly won’t see another Red Dead Redemption for a LONG time.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Halo: Campaign Evolved announced for PS5, Xbox Series, and PCEnglish
28·2 months agoIt is just me or is this is a weird thing to make?
- They already remastered Halo:CE in the Master Chief Collection. I know it was criticized as a bad remaster, but it’s weird to just do it again before…
- Halo 3 still doesn’t have a remaster. Why didn’t they remaster/remake Halo 3 instead?
- It’s been obvious for years now that 343/Halo Studios has no good ideas left Halo franchise anymore, and this just further proves that.
- The Halo IP created an interesting world and framework for countless compelling stories. It was time to leave Master Chief behind a long time ago and make some compelling spinoffs. Reach and ODST (to a lesser extent) were successful. It’s so frustrating AAA studios are so terrified of trying anything new.
I hope they at least make it a DLC to the Master Chief collection which did a good job of consolidating the series. I suspect this will be standalone and be confusing when people try to “Buy Halo 1”.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Revolt became StoatEnglish
2·2 months agowhat’s really federation on a system that isolates conversations per server?
That’s like asking why Lemmy needs federation if posts are tied to a Community.
No federation means:
- Every server requires a different user account to join a room
- Every server needs to be accessed from a different URL
- Users in different servers cannot direct message, call, or friendlist one another
Federated platforms aren’t perfect, but they solve these problems.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Revolt became StoatEnglish
21·2 months agoThis seems like a cool project. I especially love the UI’s similarity to Discord, but it still has a long road ahead to be a viable chat platform IMO.
I’ve been periodically checking in with
RevoltStoat for about a year now, and personally, the two things that I’m waiting for are:- Voice chat - It seems like this is coming, but they had to clean up a bunch or tech debt first
- Federation - Self-hosted chat is great, but not being able to talk to other servers is incredibly limiting for a social tool. AFAIK they’re not planning on implementing this. This is likely a deal-breaker for a lot of folks.
I’m currently running Matrix synapse, and while matrix is kinda a messy ecosystem, it’s really hard to compete with its maturity and adoption in the FOSS / Self-Hosted space.
Also, not super important, but this blog post reads like it’s AI generated.

9·2 months agoA frustrating number of devices rely on cloud connectivity for astoundingly rudimentary tasks.
I was once at a friend’s house for a game night and it was really cold; everyone was under blankets. I asked to turn up the heat and they said, “The internet is down, so the heat doesn’t work.” 🤯

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How to set up a decentralized game/chat serverEnglish
2·2 months agoIf avoiding downtime is your number one priority and you’re willing to take on a lot of complexity to achieve it, then Kubernetes is probably the way to go. There are various chat platforms that can be distributed, but keeping a game server state synced between nodes isn’t an easy task. There’s a reason most multiplayer games are instanced.
I do find it a little odd that you’re so concerned about uptime with a casual gaming server, but to each their own.

Gaming@lemmy.ml•What's the video game equivalent of fast food?English
5·2 months agoYou’re clearly missing the point of OP’s post. This has nothing to do with novelty or creativity.
A steak isn’t original or avant-garde, but it’s certainly isn’t “fast food” even if you think the steak is cooked poorly.
I think you’re just conflating “shallow” with “bad”.

Yes, but having both in place can help mitigate lateral movement risk.
