39·3 months agoI genuinely thought a bunch of new businesses were opening locally and wanted to support them for their longevity, it’s only reading this that I realise they’re all just brands. It’s incredibly deceptive and they absolutely shouldn’t be legally allowed to get away with it.

Technology@beehaw.org•People regret buying Amazon smart displays after being bombarded with ads
49·6 months agoI hate to be an I-Told-You-So type of guy, but surely you look at how they handle their tablets and knew it was why these things are so cheap. Honestly the best smart display I’ve seen so far outside of the DIY ones is the Pixel Tablet and that was underpowered as a tablet. It’s funny though, because smart displays will become ubiquitous eventually not just because they’re useful, but because they’re prime real estate; look at the Samsung fridges. I’m guessing more people will have to install a Pi-Hole just to make them bearable.

Technology@beehaw.org•YouTube Live adding joint horizontal/vertical streams, side-by-side ads
27·7 months agoConcurrent ads is one usage, yes. But from when people started reacting on YouTube, I always thought there should be a more seamless way. When I started seeing takedown notices for people reacting to music videos, I thought why can’t they just overlay/embed it. It seemed like a no-brainer to me. Now that technology is finally here.
As for the technology being co-opted by ads, on my TV I don’t have ReVanced and so am stuck with ads, if I can have silent ads play at the side rather than delay what I’m trying to watch at the beginning of a video, I’d go for the side ads.
So…
Great. Here’s something no one asked for
Except me!

Only when there’s prefilled text IIRC
It’s client based. The web UI doesn’t have the text.
Summit removed it and then brought it back because PieFed kept shitting the bed. Yay, degraded user experience for everyone!
