I hate it, there’s huge monopolization of game engines right now. Red engine honestly wasn’t bad. It was buggy at first, but they worked a good chunk out. I hear developer experience wasn’t great but it could be ironed out over time.
I’m worried about so many using unreal, there should be much more competition in the space
I hope Godot matures well over the next 5-10 years. I know its been around a while, but its only been open source and publicly available for less than half of that time.
Feels a lot like where unity was 10-12 years ago. Not yet a AAA engine but a great one for indie and budget titles. It just needs time to grow.
Yeah Unreal is owned by Epic, who have a history of corporate greed. Unity isn’t any better. I wish more would look at Godot as an option. I’ve played some great games written in Godot. Plus it’s FOSS!
I am tired of practically every game being made in Unreal.
I’d rather see everything be on an engine that everyone knows how to work with and doesn’t completely suck, than for everything to take 15-20 years to make because they want to use their own engines that end up sucking. Or GameBryo/Creation. Shutters Ew.
I also dislike it, but it’s easy to see why. Once something is both this widespread and user friendly it will become increasingly more popular in a positive feedback loop. Easier onboarding is so valuable compared to having to teach people your in-house engine.
I’m afraid we’ll only see more Unreal games in the future.
I see why too, but its frustrating because it means less games will be unique. More games with the same lighting system, the same caveats, the same limitations, etc.
Its like RenderWare all over again.
